Miriam Elson, who served from 1980 to 1994 as a lecturer at the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration, played an important role in establishing the field of clinical social work and the acceptance of social workers as equals with psychiatrists and psychologists who practice psychotherapy. She died May 6 in Hyde Park at the age of 99.
SGA Youth & Family Services honors Sarah Duncan
Sarah Duncan will receive the first annual Jean S. Meltzer Award from SGA Youth & Family Services, a Chicago non-profit organization that helps low-income, at-risk youth through mental health and prevention programs, including services in 35 Chicago public schools.
In the mid-1990s, Duncan helped develop one of the first community schools, a model concept for transforming neighborhood schools into community centers that offer before- and after-school enrichment programs and social services for students and parents.
Duncan is the Coordinator of the Community Schools Program at University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration. She also serves on the board the Ariel Education Initiative.

Margaret Rosenheim, former Dean of the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago and a pioneering scholar who combined training law with an interest in child welfare, died February 2, 2009. She was 82.
Larry Hawkins, the University of Chicago's long time Director of the Office of Special Programs and College Preparation died January 30, 2009. For many years SSA served as the host site for the Office of Special Programs graduation and other events and partnered with Mr. Hawkins on many community programs and initiatives.
