The Jane Addams Juvenile Court Foundation - Sheila M. Merry, Executive Director
In recognition of the centennial of the Cook County Juvenile Court, the first juvenile court in the nation, the Jane Addams Juvenile Court Foundation was created in 1999 to refocus attention on the Cook County Juvenile Court, to support and promote juvenile court reform, and to help return the Cook County Juvenile Court to its original status as a model for compassionate justice for children. The Foundation was funded initially as a three-year pilot by The Chicago Community Trust, joined by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur and the Lloyd A. Fry Foundations, to explore the potential role of a private foundation to effect change in and around the Cook County Juvenile Court. Chapin Hall is serving as incubator of the Foundation in its initial phase.
The Foundation's mission is to work closely with the leadership of the Court and its stakeholders to stimulate and support the ongoing reform of the Cook County Juvenile Court while creating the civic will necessary to ensure adequate funds to make that reform possible. JAJCF hopes to work with SSA and the Law School to increase the number of students interested and involved in the work of the Court.
