The Center for Health Administration Studies is pleased to announce the recipients of the CHAS Seed Grant Awards for 2012_2013:  Alida Bouris, Dexter Voisin, and Miwa Yasui.

THIS OPPORTUNITY IS NOW CLOSED FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2012_2013.  The Seed-Grant Program
Beginning in 2005, the Center for Health Administration Studies (CHAS) at the School of Social Service Administration has supported promising health services and policy research projects at the University of Chicago through its annual Seed-Grant Program.  The purpose of the Seed-Grant program is to facilitate research not presently funded by extramural sources, laying the foundations for larger-scale research projects that may be competitive for extramural funding.  The Program seeks to fund projects that display sound research design with high potential impact on health services and policies affecting the disadvantaged.

Guidelines

The Center anticipates funding up to 5 projects in amounts up to $20,000. Indirect costs will not be covered.  Projects are to be conducted over a 12-month period beginning in January.  Seed-Grant recipients will provide a written final report within 30 days of the project end date.  Final reports will be due by Jan 31.   A presentation about the funded seed-grant project will also be expected from each Seed-Grant recipient either during or subsequent to the funding period. Further, all investigators will also be expected to participate in the CHAS Davis lecture series and Brown Bag seminars on Tuesdays from 12 – 1:20 p.m. during the duration of the project period, i.e., January through December.  After completion of the seed grant project period, all Seed Grant recipients are strongly encouraged to become an active participant in future CHAS-sponsored seminar series.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER

Eligibility Criteria Applications are welcome from any tenure-track investigator or co-investigators affiliated with the University of Chicago at any faculty rank.  Although the lead investigator must be affiliated with the University as a faculty member, consultants may be drawn from other institutions. Postdoctoral researchers are not eligible to apply.  Priority is given to junior investigators and to those lacking other seed-grant support from the University of Chicago. Application Process Applications must be submitted electronically to chas@ssa.uchicago.edu.

Applications are due in November.

A panel appointed by the CHAS Director will review applications.  The review panel, consisting of senior faculty at the University of Chicago and investigators at other institutions with pertinent expertise, will conduct reviews and awards will be announced in December.

Review Criteria Applications will be rated based on: relevance to mission of CHAS, importance of research question, scientific merit, feasibility of the research plan in the time allotted originality, and the contribution of seed funding to the pursuit of additional funding. Reviewers will be asked to give priority to projects that: * Develop innovative areas of inquiry. * Facilitate research of junior investigators and trainees. * Increase involvement of established faculty who have worked outside traditional health areas. * Provide novel sources of primary data or the collection of pilot data.

The cost and economy of the proposed project will also be considered. IRB approval will not be required at the time of application or preliminary approval; however, no project will receive funding until IRB approval has been provided.
