SSA Response to Katrina
Dear Friends:
The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina is felt most acutely by those in Mississippi and Louisiana and especially New Orleans, and I extend heartfelt sympathy from all of us for the losses so many have suffered. For those who need assistance, the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago can be most effective in the ways described below. For those who look to SSA for guidance in how to help, we offer a number of suggestions.
– Jeanne C. Marsh, Dean, George Herbert Jones Professor
- For Students whose Graduate Studies have been Interrupted
- For Current and Incoming SSA Students
- For SSA Alumni
- For People Who Want to Help
FOR STUDENTS WHOSE GRADUATE STUDIES HAVE BEEN INTERRUPTED
SSA has already begun to accommodate displaced graduate social work students on a space available basis. Housing and some financial aid may be available. The 2005-2006 academic year begins with orientation the week of September 19 and classes on September 26. For more information contact the SSA admissions office at admissions@ssa.uchicago.edu or 773.702.1492.
FOR CURRENT AND INCOMING SSA STUDENTS
Current and incoming SSA students who are experiencing difficulties related to the hurricane may contact Madeleine Metzler at mmetzler@uchicago.edu 773.702.1492.
FOR SSA ALUMNI
SSA alumni in need of assistance with relocation or employment networking opportunities, we can put you in touch with other SSA alumni in your area. Please contact Christina Cole, 773.702.1431 or Ccole@uchicago.edu
FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO HELP:
VOLUNTEER or DONATION OF GOODS: The School of Social Service Administration will serve as a clearinghouse for volunteer activities or in-kind donations being organized by numerous social service agencies in the Chicago region. For a list of contacts, volunteer opportunities, or in-kind donation requests CLICK HERE.
We hope to identify volunteer activities for students, staff, alumni, and other interested persons on Wednesday, September 21 in the afternoon or all day Friday, September 23. Call 773.834.1763 Daniel M. Morris at dmorris1@uchicago.edu with information about your services and/or volunteer needs or if you could use volunteer assistance at these times.
HOUSING: If social work students from the affected region relocate to Chicago, they may be in need of housing. If you can help by offering housing to a student short or long term, contact Madeleine Metzler 773.702.1492 or mmetzler@uchicago.edu.
FINANCIAL DONATIONS: Staff, faculty and students who wish to make a financial contribution that will be matched by the University of Chicago CLICK HERE.
SSA supports the Social Work Disaster Assistance Fund established by the NASW Foundation. All monies donated to this fund will go directly to help social workers affected by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. We hope in this way to help them get to the position where they can once again provide the necessary social work services for their communities. You can make a contribution today by clicking here.
