Master's Program

The AM program at the School of Social Service Administration prepares students for advanced professional practice in both clinical and administrative positions.

Careers in Clinical Social Work
Approximately 60% of a graduating class will pursue careers in direct practice as case managers, counselors, therapists and clinicians. They generally become Licensed Social Workers (LSW) immediately upon graduation. After two years of professional work and supervision, they may become Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW). Licensure is required by state law to practice social work and to be officially called "social workers."

Careers in Social Administration
The other 40% of each graduating class will pursue administrative careers. This career path typically starts with positions as program managers, program directors and program coordinators. Other popular fields include community, economic, and workforce development, policy advocacy and research, program evaluation, and grant writing and grant-management.

Doctoral Program

Graduates of SSA's doctoral program go on to become leaders in the field of social work scholarship. Upon graduating, the majority of our students take faculty positions in universities. Some also take positions in research institutes or government agencies.

“The hardest decision I had to make when I was applying for the AB/AM program was whether to become an administrative or clinical student,” says Margaret Marion, AB '12. “I understood that whichever track I chose, I would still have room to pursue classes in the other track that fit in with my academic and professional goals"
