There are several educational options available to NIH principal investigators and key personnel in order to meet the ethical guidelines for human subjects research requirements.

Education Sessions: The sessions are 2 hours long and include the basic information on the ethical guidelines for human subjects research. Education sessions are presented by the IRB Manager or IRB Member in a lecture and discussion format. A power point presentation and handouts are used to stress the educational objectives.

Attendance at a Regional or National Meeting on the Protection of Human Subjects: There are a variety of one- or more-day conferences or training programs offered by the Office for Human Research Protection, AAMC, ARENA/PRIMR and other professional organizations. For example, the AAMC offered a one-day conference on human subjects on September 18, 2000 in Rosemont, IL. Key personnel will be asked to verify attendance by providing the IRB with a copy of the certification of completion or a letter from the conference coordinators confirming attendance and a copy of the agenda.

Attendance at an education session of professional organizations: Professional organizations may provide training sessions for their members that include human subjects protection. Key personnel will be asked to verify attendance by providing the IRB with a copy of the certification of completion or a letter from the conference coordinators confirming attendance and a copy of the agenda.

University of Rochester Training Program, Protecting Study Volunteers in Research: The University of Rochester has made available a courseware package on the protection of human subjects. Combining chapters on the history, ethics and regulations, and roles and responsibilities concerning the use of human subjects with the primary source documents, this book also includes an examination, which is to be completed and sent to the University of Rochester. If an adequate score is obtained, a certificate of completion is returned. This package is available through the SBS IRB office ($37.00 per packet) or directly from CenterWatch, Inc (800-765-9647).

Tutorial websites: You may log on to one of the following web-sites to complete either of the on-line human subjects tutorials. At then end of the tutorials you will be presented with a certification that verifies that you have completed the tutorial. Have this certification forwarded to sbsirb@ura.uchicago.edu or copy it and send it to the IRB office.
