Adolescents seem to be in greater crisis than at any time in our nation's history. Adolescents are responding to this crisis in many ways: shootings; stabbings; bombings; fire starting; bullying; intimidating; drug abuse; drug selling; cyberspace addiction, gang affiliation; hate group affiliation; apathy; destructive relationships; depression; running away; suicide; homicide; prostitution; and dropping out of school. The primary goal of this course is to identify social work interventions with adolescents in crisis, which put them at risk to harm themselves and society. Areas of focus include: reducing the risk of school and community violence among adolescents; preventing adolescent suicide; reducing self-harming behavior; decreasing involvement in gangs and other destructive peer groups; and helping adolescents in crisis make healthy decisions. The learning objectives will be achieved through the analysis of selected readings, class discussion, assignments, multi-media presentations, and experiential activities.
