The Center for Health Administration Studies (CHAS) is an interdisciplinary health policy research center in the School for Social Service Administration (SSA) at the University of Chicago. CHAS focuses on emerging research in the area of health with particular focus (and expertise) in health care and health policy for disadvantaged populations.

Under the auspices of George Bugbee, The Health Information Foundation in New York was transferred to the University of Chicago, and renamed The Center for Health Administration Studies in 1962.

Over the years, CHAS evolved from a research center with its own support infrastructure into a streamlined center operating to facilitate intellectual connections and research collaborations with health-related researchers across the broader University community. Today, the new organization of CHAS provides a more effective use of endowment funds to support health and health policy research.

CHAS operates a seed grant initiative for health related researchers. The goal of the seed grant program is to encourage and help facilitate health-related research at SSA and at the University of Chicago. All funded research supports the broader vision for CHAS; that is, to create a new knowledge base and a broader understanding of the health Care and health policy for disadvantaged populations.

CHAS also supports lively seminars, the Michael M. Davis Lecture Series, on a broad range of health-related research. In particular, the series focuses on the intersection between health policy and the broad needs of severely disadvantaged populations.

CHAS has also initiated a new dissertation fellowship as part of the continuing effort to meet academic needs. The new dissertation fellowship is a 1-year award for a doctoral student near completion of the dissertation. This fellowship is open to doctoral students across the UC campus whose work speaks to the health of disadvantaged populations.
