Dialectical Behavior Therapy Consultation Group: An Acceptance-Based Approach

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive behavioral therapy designed to address the unique concerns of multi-problem persons who have not shown the capacity to engage consistently in traditional psychotherapies. Originally developed in an attempt to address the unique concerns of persons with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, DBT is now considered effective with persons who engage in any behavior where the function of the behavior is to escape, avoid, or attenuate painful private experiences (i.e., thoughts, emotions, memories, urges). It is a comprehensive and intensive therapy involving four clinical activities: skills training, individual psychotherapy, telephone consultation, and group consultation.

The Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Consultation Group provides mental health professionals the opportunity to meet in monthly sessions for a combination of activities including didactic seminars on a contextual perspective, discussion on relevant readings, experiential exercises, and case consultation.

The group will meet throughout the year on the second Thursday of each month. Prospective participants may attend the first session for $65 without committing to the full series.

The schedule of events include:

  • Mindfulness practice
  • Collection of Topics of Discussion
  • Announcements
  • Didactic moment
  • Case consultation
  • Wrap-Up - Implications for life and practice

Participants will be exposed to the principles and practices of various third wave behavioral therapies including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Emphasis will be placed on the role of function, context, and acceptance in the understanding and analysis of emotional suffering.
