Spring Quarter 2013 Convocation

Degree candidates, congratulations! You are on your way to receiving a degree from the School of Social Service Administration. What follows is a list of activities taking place during the week of convocation. We hope that you will participate in all of these activities, particularly the Friday evening Hooding Ceremony which is a more intimate and formal event. Please note that you must RSVP for this event and attend the rehearsal (see details below).

SSA Hooding Rehearsal

Rockefeller Chapel, 5820 S. Woodlawn

Wednesday, June 12th from 12 – 1 pm

Attendance is required for all Spring graduates who plan to attend the Hooding Ceremony.


SGA Graduation Party

Renaissance Marriott Chicago Downtown Hotel-Rooftop, 1 West Wacker Drive

Friday, June 7, 5:30-8:30 pm

The School of Social Service Administration Graduating Class of 2013 is cordially invited to a Celebratory Rooftop Cocktail Party hosted by the Student Government Association.

Come celebrate the occasion with food, beverages, a DJ, and your classmates! Enjoy this final opportunity to spend time together with the entire SSA community.

SSA Hooding Ceremony

Rockefeller Chapel, 5820 S. Woodlawn

Friday, June 14th from 6 – 7:30 pm (timing is approximate)

During the Hooding Ceremony, candidates are called up individually and hooded by SSA faculty.

Students line up at Ida Noyes Hall (1212 E. 59th Street) beginning at 4:30 pm. Degree candidates wear the robe appropriate for the degree he or she is to receive at Convocation. There will be no secure place at Ida Noyes to store personal items (such as a purse or backpack), and no items may be carried with you.

Guest seating available starting at 5:00 pm.

Students planning to attend the Hooding Ceremony must RSVP here no later than Friday, May 24th at 5 p.m. Students who have not RSVP’d will not be permitted to take part in the ceremony.

The Hooding Ceremony is not a ticketed event; however, Rockefeller Chapel has limited seating so students are respectfully asked to limit their number of guests to six people.


515th Convocation

The University’s Main Quadrangle

Saturday, June 15th from 9:15 – 11:15 am (rain or shine)

All candidates participate in this ceremony, during which the president will verbally confer degrees to groups of candidates by degree type and academic program.

The Main Quadrangle will open at 7 a.m. Guest seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Early arrival is recommended for best seating. SSA students line up in Bartlett Quadrangle beginning at 8:15 am. To guarantee placement in the procession, candidates should arrive no later than 8:55 am.

Information on renting or purchasing academic attire, graduation announcements, class rings, photography and more can be found at the University’s convocation website.


SSA Diploma Distribution & Reception

School of Social Service Administration, 969 E. 60th Street

Saturday, June 15th immediately after convocation

Spring 2013 graduates, family and friends are invited back to SSA for a reception where they can pick up their diploma and celebrate their accomplishment with the SSA community.


Licensure Information

Once you have obtained your degree, you are eligible to sit for the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) exam to become a Licensed Social Worker. See here for more information.
