The growing presence of the Hispanic population in the United States demonstrates a need for professionals who can help Spanish-speaking clients.
The two levels of Spanish for Social Workers are intended for individuals who have previous knowledge of the Spanish language but need more conversational practice and familiarity with the sociocultural values of the Hispanic community, as well as practice with the vocabulary used in the field of social work. Upon completion of either level, participants will receive a certificate for one credit from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in addition to 20 hours of continuing education credits (CECs).
A written test and phone interview are required to ensure appropriate placement in either the Intermediate or Advanced level course. Please contact the Professional Development Program office to schedule.
Intermediate: This level is appropriate for participants with a basic to low intermediate proficiency in Spanish. Participants will gain confidence through the oral practice of the fundamentals of Spanish grammar and the use of basic vocabulary and phrases related to interviewing skills for social services purposes.
Advanced: This level is appropriate for participants with a high intermediate to advanced proficiency in Spanish. Participants will review the use (oral and written) of Spanish grammar through the discussion of topics related to work in social services.
Please Note: Course participants in the Intermediate Level must purchase the textbook, Basic Spanish for Social Services, Houghton Mifflin Company; Jarvis, A. & Lebredo, L. (2006 or 2010), available through an on-line bookseller.
Both classes meet Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8:00pm at SSA. The next offering will take place in fall 2013.
