School of Social Service Administration & Chapin Hall Center for Children Institutional Review Board

The Social Service Administration Institutional Review Board (SSA/CHC IRB) web site is a resource for all investigators from the School of Social Service Administration and Chapin Hall conducting human subjects research. For biological or medical research IRB information, contact the BSD/Hospitals IRB. For all other non-biomedical units and areas of research at the University of Chicago, contact the SBS IRB.

Purpose of SSA/CHC IRB:

The University of Chicago's Federalwide Assurance (FWA) requires that ALL research conducted with human subjects or data generated from human subjects be reviewed and approved by an appropriate IRB. Determine if IRB approval is necessary for your research.

Functions of SSA/CHC IRB:

  • The SSA/CHC IRB reviews and approves, disapproves, or defers all research protocols. Information on review process
  • Provides assistance with IRB applications for staff, students, and faculty
  • Provides the NIH-mandated educational sessions on the fundamentals of the protection of human subjects. This requirement applies to all key personnel on NIH funded research. NIH Guide announcement.

The SSA/CHC IRB is currently in the process of developing a web-based IRB system - IRBWISE.This system will allow for on-line submission of research protocols, IRB review, and electronic notification of IRB determinations.

The SSA/CHC IRB will continue to accept hardcopy protocol submission materials while IRBWISE is under construction.
