Dear SSA Students, Staff and Faculty:

As we prepare to welcome continuing and new students to the SSA community, we are called to acknowledge and reflect on the devastating events in Charlottesville, VA last week. Our students come to SSA to gain the analytical and practical tools needed to further social justice in our society. These events should compel all of us as a community to recommit to social justice values that hold equality and human dignity at the center of everything we do.

The racist events in Charlottesville make clear that violent attacks against groups because of their religion or the color of their skin are unfortunately not a thing of the past. Such hatred and intolerance is still present in today’s America. Charlottesville draws necessary attention to the need to respond to this hateful rhetoric and violence and to broader issues of racial, political, social, and economic injustice that disproportionately affect communities of color. Our obligation to the most vulnerable and oppressed in our communities is not negotiable. This commitment is reflected in SSA’s mission, values, and curriculum, as well as our faculty statement of solidarity.

Social justice is a core value of our profession and SSA’s mission. We at SSA are committed to living out our mission of “working toward a just and humane society” by supporting our students as they prepare to take on these and many other of society’s most pressing challenges. Our values and convictions—and our professional and academic training—mean little if we do not resolve to translate what we believe and what we know to the pursuit of a more just society that upholds the dignity and worth of all people. We must rededicate ourselves to doing our work well and with urgency and purpose.
