Types of Placements

Core/1st Year Field Placement

First year placements mirror the real world of social work practice. Students gain an understanding of the fundamental tenets and philosophy of social work and the realities of professional practice in the field. Students develop beginning competence in direct practice through experience in engagement, assessment, intervention, and reflection. 

  • Full-time students attend their internship for two days per week (16 hours) and complete 480 hours during the academic year. 
  • Extended Evening Program students attend their internship for one full day or two half days (8 hours) per week and complete 400 hours during 12 consecutive months

Clinical Field Placement

Students in the clinical concentration develop more advanced clinical knowledge and competence in pyschosocial assessment and intervention with individuals, couples, families, and groups. Under the guidance of an experienced supervisor, students are expected to understand more than one practice approach to prepare them for broad-based professional practice with a range of clients, problems, and environmental situations.  

  • Full-time students attend their internship for three days per week (24 hours) and complete 640 hours during the academic year. 
  • Extended Evening Program students attend their internship for one or two days (10 hours) per week and complete 720 hours during 20 consecutive months

Social Administration Field Placement

Students in the social administration concentration develop advanced practice skills in community organizing, planning and development; human services management; and policy planning, analysis and advocacy. Students are placed in a wide range of settings and roles related to their major area of interest.  

  • Full-time students attend their internship for two or three days per week (16-24 hours) and complete 496 hours during the academic year. 
  • Extended Evening Program students attend their internship for one full day or two half days (8 hours) per week and complete 576 hours during 20 consecutive months
